Digital Virgin has technical photographers on staff for photo shoots or consulting. The concept of technical photography is simply record keeping in a non-destructive manner.
Photography is a method whereby information in the form of light associated with a particular subject is recorded, stored and analyzed for subsequent interpretation and evaluation of the real subject at a later time.
It is important to note that photographs are not the real subject but rather records of the appearance of a subject based on light emitted, reflected or transmitted by the subject. Therefore, photography is generally not considered an invasive or destructive recording medium since the contact between the record and the subject is simply one associated with light. As such, photography is inherently dependent on image formation principles associated with the field of optics. In this article we will deal with some of the very basic principles and refer the reader to substantive optics discussions for supporting materials.
At the very basis of image formation is the fact that when light is emitted from a source or reflected from a subject, light rays emanate from it in all directions but modified by subject characteristics. These include such things as refraction, reflection, absorption, etc. For the sake of simplicity we will deal with subjects that are perceived as real by the fact that they reflect light to our eyes and the image they form on our retina is interpreted by our brain as the subject we are looking at whatever that might be.

An example of a technical photography project was a recent need of the US Department of Energy for a deep water photgraphic recording system. The cameras not shown here are capable of 1500 meter depth with image capture and recording with and with out atmosphereic correction. The system records one parsect of area every 90 minutes in hi resolution multiple still photography. The images are captured at the rate of 180 per second with transponder at sat nav embeded in each frame. The imaging equipment is loaded on deck on ocean going vessels for use. The revised version of this equipment now is one third the size using xServe hardware. This system replaced a $250,000 US analog system for just over $80,000 US.
