Digital Virgin Inc. provides several levels of software service.
The first leverages Open Source and GPL software resources heavily. The Open Source movement provides critically peer review code base for tool construction. The basic code is provided freely and contains the original copywright information when the components are used. Once tools are created using these software components changes and additions to that software is available freely to other developers. This system is similar to the have a penny leave a penny , need a penny take a penny trays found at some stores. This does not mean that the configuration, customization and installation of the software is free only the code base that feeds the development. Open Source tends to be more robust and versatile than restricted code basis such as Microsoft's and Apple's. Another advantage of developing using open source software is that anyone can continue from the point that we leave off.
The second type of software service we provide is standards based web development. With many great WYSIWYG applications on the market people have assumed that anyone can create a website. While this is true in the most general sense the efficacy and esthetic of that amateur creation may be substandard. Trends and fads do not produce usable products with our service we tailor the web-tools to meet and exceed the needs of our clients. We do not do webpages there are several thousand graphic artists with limited knowledge of business, marketing or sales that can provide webpages. We provide a more complete solution including the promotion and tracking of the efficacy of the web-tools we create. Our efforts have produced sites that receive a million unique viewers per month. Fifth we can also create utilities for custom needs. One example is a fee calculator created for the Boynton Beach Art in Public Places Program. This program collects 1% of the proposed project value as a retainer for public art. 70% of the 1% is then available for refund to the land developer as reimbursement for Public art expenditures. 30% of the 1% is held as contribution to the Public Art endowment. As you can see the math seems complicated and the land developers had difficulty understanding the formula.
